Rochester Minnesota's annual ice party @DowntownRochesterMN’s #SocialIce was another success. We had two Afidus cameras running to capture the ice carving action by Trevor @metroice. The Think Bank sponsored Paul Bunyan sculpture took about four hours to carve and the cameras were capturing a frame every 5 seconds. We had to capture the Kraus Anderson tower crane and wait for the ending, the ice wall assembly is very cool. In the cold, rain and snow, both cameras ran for two days with battery power to last weeks more. At the end of this project we had 15gb of footage and most was sped up 600-1000%. Occasionally there are once-in-a-lifetime projects in our local area we want to document. This was a nearly 100 year old hotel building in downtown Rochester, MN. Demolition work began ... before Christmas and we set a camera across the street with a capture every minute from 6am - 6pm. The camera ran for 42 days unattended and this is the awesome end result. This was an experiment for the TLC team. Sunday night’s eclipse, had to be captured. Why not see what the new Afidus camera could do. We weren’t expecting greatness with 35mm lens, but the results are intriguing. After compiling the footage, there is a lot going in this clip, let’s break it down, read on friends! Opening click, Marie’s full moon, then moonrise with the Afidus. Captured every 20 seconds, star mode, highest quality. Transition to the eclipse, shot with my Afidus, 5 second capture interval, star mode, -1 exposure, highest quality. After the eclipse it’s back to Marie’s for full moon light and an amazing sunrise. The video is enhanced with Marie’s awesome eclipse stage photos which match the time lapse progression, taken with her 6DII and 100-400 lens. The Afidus camera footage can’t compare to Marie’s full frame DSLR with 400mm lens. However, the Afidus clip is more about what it’s not. It’s not noisy, it’s not overexposed and it wasn’t complex or costly. Sure the moon is a speck, but it’s an impressive little speck to us, 35mm is a long way from 400mm. But the sunrise footage, wow! Marie let her camera run all night, the sunrise and clouds over the barren fields resulted in more magic. The capabilities of the Afidus ATL-200 impress us more each day. It may not be a tool of choice for lunar photography, but on the other end of the spectrum, the macro capabilities are amazing! We are very excited to share this video with you. Ever since we first started working with the new Afidus camera the zoom and macro capabilities have been jaw dropping. Never before has content like this been so easy to capture with a single camera. Sure you could use a DSLR and macro lens, but this represents a week of work, thousands of shutter actuations, DSLR rigs are expensive and shutters wear out. Other time lapse cameras require pricy and difficult to focus optional lenses. With the Afidus, get the camera close, grab the zoom slider, bring it all the way in and tap to precisely focus with the ease of full screen preview on your phone. I had been trying to capture this content for a couple of weeks. Come to find out, there are few flowers which dramatically bloom this time of year. Thanks to Diana @sargentsgardens in #RochMN for recommending Asiatic Lilies which worked perfectly, although each bloom represents at least a good 18+ hours. This is not a problem for the Afidus camera, I captured with 10, 20 and 30 second intervals and didn’t change the batteries the entire time.
