  • Preflight Checklist | Afidus

preflight checklist Deploying the Afidus Time Lapse camera is a process. These handy tips are helpful to ensure and double check the camera has been started for your project. For drone operators this is right up your ally. A simple checklist for the easiest things to do and be reminded of. Prior to your first big project, we recommend taking a few days to get used to the system. Proceed with a series of short term, start ups as you get used to this new process. Basically, your training wheels are on. When you run into questions, give us a call, we're here to help. 1 batts & Stats STEP 1: Check the batts & Stats Always start your projects off with a fresh set of brand new name brand batteries. Energizer Max are the leading brand we recommend. Check to make sure your card is freshly formatted and clear of content. For your first time lapse (and for your regular time lapse project) there is no need to use a different card. We recommend using the manufactured supplied Sansdisc Ultra [HC 1] 16GB mSD card. These cameras must use a card with slower write speed. BEST BATTERIES BEST CARDS If it's been a while in the field or resting on the shelf, now is a great time to check for any firmware updates. FIRMWARE 2 mount + frame + FOCUS STEP 2: mount IT, frame IT, FOCUS IT mount it securely Mount in a solid secure location. Duct tape maybe nice but not recommended friends. Zip ties will do in a pinch for short term situations. For the long haul we love using the Clamp Monster. frame the scene Frame your shot. Remember to rotate your mobile device vertically horizontally and pinch zoom. Helpful tip: turn the grid view on and check the wide angle correction to see which appeals best for your scene. focuS check For Afidus ATL-200/200S only. Pinch zoom your screen to check the focus. FOCUS CHECK SNAPSHOT FOR IMAGE ALIGNMENT Use the snapshot feature within the APP and review the photo saved for focus. Check it. If it’s not clear on your screen it will not be clear on your video. This step doubles as the photo for the image alignment process-which when you service your camera at a later date comes in handy. IMAGE ALIGNMENT 3 schedule + screenshots STEP 3: set, take screen shots & start it set the schedule If you are using calendar scheduling select the days you wish to record but turning the days ON to blue. Set the working hours you wish to record. Select Set. To confirm them there will be an audible "beep" and check mark that pops up. TAKE screenshots Of all setup screens: App screen, Information, Menu screen, and finally (if you didn't do it above to check your focus) take a Snapshot (critical). Why: because this will help you at the next camera check (within a month) to recall your settings. Start it To start your recording select the standard timelapse mode to record in. Remember, any other recording mode is in the "Creative" recording mode category. DEPLOYED NOTE: If you do not hear an audible "BEEP-BEEP" this is a false start. Simply long press the power button. Reconnect with WiFi. Start the app and start the record process again. The camera is depolyed when you hear the audible "Beep-Beep", see the checkmark on the confirmation screen, the app closes, and the LED will blink as stated above. camera check 6 camera check when & what to bring with you STEP 6: check IT We recommend taking a few days to get used to the system prior to the start of your project. In your first series of time lapse you are getting used to this new system. Basically, your training wheels are on. As you get familiar with the system continue with the LED visual checks. For aggressive projects; "aggressive" meaning any interval duration less than 20 second for more than 8 hours a day we recommend more frequent visual camera checks. If you are a seasoned pro-user, we especially recommend checking the cameras after inclement weather and on highly active sites. WHEN TO CHECK When you are in the field and on the job-site checking your camera there are a few extra handy items to bring. These essential items include: Batteries, Cards, Clamps and mSD cord. We have outlined these essential and extra items in this article as a just in case. • ABOUT | Afidus ATL-200 Long Term Time Lapse Camera

OUR TAKE About the Cam This site is loaded with camera features, photos and examples. You can see this is an exciting new camera, unlike anything else available. Since receiving our first camera a few months ago it is all we have been shooting with and there were a few games of rock-paper-scissors over who gets to use it next. The greatest feature, aside from the long battery life, is the ability to zoom which gives you creative control by cropping out unwanted areas of your video. The camera has an optical zoom lens, you can hear the internal movement when you change the zoom range. Once the autofocus kicks in and you see the result the outcome is so satisfying. There is a little more to think about with this camera. You will want to verify your focus with every new shoot. It's very easy to do, however, if you are accustomed to simply mounting a camera and starting the recording, the Afidus will take a little getting used to. You will be rewarded with a perfectly crisp and framed video. The specifications are amazing, but the camera is not time tested for long term exterior use. If you want to capture an exterior home build in Arizona or Alaska we may recommend another camera for now. However, the Afidus is a great camera for everything else. From a kitchen remodel to woodworking, 3D printing to crafting the Afidus is a perfect long term time lapse camera for most uses. Update, the cold weather performance has been phenomenal using lithium batteries. Our cameras ran through the -40 degree polar vortex without any issues, however, it was nice piece of mind to check the indicator light occasionally. We are learning amazing new features every day, tonight's discovery, the LED indicator flashes every five seconds to tell you a recording is in progress, unlike other cameras which only flash along with the interval. Even the date and time are always correct, based upon your phone's date and time. Welcome to our new generation of content creation. ABOUT US & OUR SITE Get to know Josh Banks and Marie Ferguson are the faces of our small TimeLapseCameras.com team. We have built a reputation of customer care with unprecedented user support. Check out our Instagram account for testimonials, a wide variety of videos and the latest Afidus camera updates. Josh’s roots using dedicated time lapse cameras started back in 2013. Working as a commercial photographer in Rochester, Minnesota, he was hired to do a year long construction time lapse. Following the success of the project, Josh was discovered by Brinno and was hired to work directly with the company, assisting with major trade shows, work on location in Taiwan, content creation, marketing direction for US communications and provide top level customer care in North America. This top-level customer care prompted him to know the intricacies of the camera system and where users need the most assistance. Based on the details of your project he is able to assist you with the best camera choice and matched settings tailored to your project needs. In 2016, Josh stepped away from Brinno to start a site focused on customer care, TimeLapseCameras.com . Branding and imagery are a key to start up success, he turned to Marie, a professional Graphic Designer and Photographer, from their previous careers. The concept was born with a phone call, "hey Marie, I need a logo." Two years later, we now have an established time lapse camera company. Marie handles video editing for clients worldwide, graphic design and much of our content creation. In October 2018, Afidus, a surveillance camera manufacturer in Taiwan, contacted us and wanted us to evaluate their new camera. We received one of the first pre-production cameras and we were blown away with the potential. An exclusive partnership between Afidus and TimeLapseCameras grew very quickly. Afidus wanted customer support in North America and we were a perfect fit. We have helped with app development and feature suggestions. Remarkable updates have happened and there are more exciting features coming soon to the system. User input has been a critical force implementing positive change for this system. Afidus has done an amazing job making the magic happen. AfidusCam.com was mapped out in December of 2018. We needed to showcase this amazing new camera. TimeLapseCameras.com is built as a shopping site, bells and whistles are lacking. This site is an explosive medium for us conveying the awesome features and video content communicating excitement and sharing awesome content. They are very proud to say every photo and video were created by us and every word was typed with our fingers. This is an amazing time, thank you for taking a few minutes to get to know us. ABOUT ORDERING The wait will be worth it We built this site to showcase the amazing features of the Afidus camera, to order please visit our shopping site TimeLapseCameras.com

RECORDING SCENES Selecting the right recording scene is wise for the project. Most often you will record in AUTO scene mode. All the other recording modes are creative with unique ending results. This page is dedicated to the quick summary providing links to videos and articles further explaining these modes. We recommend you master the art and function of using the Time Lapse camera system before changing the recording mode prior to playing with the rest of scene modes. Always double check your recording scene from the Information screen. MORE TIPS AUTO AUTO Mode (start here!) The beginning mode to be in for nearly every situation. Use this mode as the perfect light balancing blend from dawn to dusk. Shutter speed is approximately less than 1/3 second. DAYLIGHT Mode This scene mode is perfect for Daytime use. TIP: For ATL-200S users be sure to have the Split File by Date feature ON from the settings menu as a handy way to keep your days in separate files. Shutter speed is approximately less than 1/30 second. Daylight STAR Mode You guessed it. This is for for our nighttime enthusiasts. Those who want to record from dusk to dawn and everything during those long night owl nights. Good for stars, sunset/sunrises, maybe even comet. We find the system works better with more light than the absence of it. Think, moon-lit sky and snow on the ground, which helps to reflect light. Go ahead, try it out in your city backyard to see the results for yourself. Shutter speed is approximately less than 2 second. STAR BLC (Back light Compensation) A NEW scene recording mode in the 200S family. This mode is all about balancing exposure of the scene. It's interesting to consider in situations where the scene is lit from behind and you want to balance out the light from the back to the front of the subject. We recommend you try this one out carefully and see to the results for yourself in a test before committing to a long term project in this mode. ARTICLE ON BLC BLC more tid-bits of good information check that white balance ARTICLE Fact, light changes throughout the day. For our time-lapse users you can control the white balance by locking it down to a specific color to reduce color shift throughout the day. Fast tip of the day: use Auto, Day or try out Florescent white balance in your scene. MORE Tips Auto Exposure Optimizer ARTICLE AE (Auto Exposure) Optimizer improves the shifts in white balance, potential flicker and exposure fluctuations with light changing through the day and your scene. This feature overrides the 50/60 Hz selection and reduces exposure flicker found in interior lighting conditions. When in doubt if your shooting indoors, turn this ON from the settings fly out menu. FIRMWARE Firmware updates are located here, please check this periodically to ensure you are using the most current firmware. SCREEN ICONS APP ICONS EXPLAINED FPS (Frames per Second) Since a video is made up of frames, each photo the camera captures will end up representing one frame in your final video. This is probably best left at 30 FPS. 30 FPS will give you the smoothest playback for your video. INTERVAL This is the time between each shot. More info on this can be found below in the "recording modes explained section" QUALITY This is video quality. The selection is from 1 - 4. It adjusts the bitrate of the image. Lowering this will increase battery life and use less memory, but lessen image quality. This is best left to 4 (high quality). SCENE This adjusts shoot settings for either auto, day or night projects. This may be useful to you if you’re shooting a night scene, but really, this is best left to auto. RESOLUTION You can switch between 1080p or the 720p resolution if required. This is probably best left at "full" 1080 setting. ASPECT RATIO This switches between 16:9 to 1:1 aspect. 1:1 is useful if you're filming instagram videos; otherwise leave this at 16:9 EXPOSURE This adjusts how bright or dark your pictures appear by adjusting the shutter speed of the camera. This is best left to 0. WHITE BALANCE This setting adjusts the colour temperature of your shots to make the image look more natural. Again, best left alone unless you're familiar with photography. CONTRAST Contrast is the difference between the blacks and the whites of your image. High contrast means the blacks are really dark and the whites are really bright. Again, best left alone. SHARPNESS You can either sharpen, or soften your image to your liking. We generally leave this on 0 but +1 (sharpened) can be useful depending on your project. SATURATION Colour saturation is used to describe the intensity of colour in the image. A saturated image has overly bright colours. We generally leave this at 0, but +1 can make colours “pop” a little more. HDR This stands for High Dynamic Range. It means that your camera will process photos slightly differently in order to capture greater detail from bright and dark areas in your photo. We leave this a high setting for best image quality. Screen Icons SETTINGS MENU Digging deeper into the belly and programing of the Afidus Camera App. This is the critical hub location for calendar scheduling, firmware update and unlocking the cameras potential. Updated: March, 2021 Select number for more information Setting Menu Recording Modes RECORDING MODES This section briefly describes what each record mode does, and when you might want to use it. This is a critical location to double check all your settings. Image Alignment Tutorial Get to know the Afidus App features and your camera. Test it before you start a larger project. Consider making an easy time lapse test recording at an interval of 10 seconds for 2 hours. Check your card and battery status in the upper right hand corner of the app. Always start your projects with a fresh set of leading name brand batteries and a cleared card. For long term daytime projects, and after inclement weather, we recommend checking your camera more frequently. In most cases, if you are recording during weekday hours Monday – Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm at an interval of one minute, check your cameras monthly. Use lithium batteries when temperatures drop below 30F/0C to extend the run time and prevent unwanted voltage drops. It is always better to have more footage than not enough. You don’t want an editing nightmare, but you don’t want to wish you had captured more. Many customers come to us and say they have a year long project, only to find out, the major action happens over a few months. Plan for the major action, everything else is a bonus. We are happy to discuss your settings at any time. For a long term project, there is no reason to capture during dusk to dawn hours. Dark-light-dark-light transitions can be annoying in a time lapse. You won’t notice an hour cut out of everyday, concentrate on the best light and save yourself an editing headache. We recommend setting your camera’s timer for daylight hours only. If you need to install your camera a good distance from the ground out of arms reach, install the camera upside down. Use the Afidus App to rotate the footage180 degrees. This allows you to check the LED indicator from the ground. Video link on this feature. Using your mobile device, take screenshots of your settings and a snapshot of the frame using the Afidus App to assist you with repositioning the camera in the event it must be moved. To take a Snapshot and use Image Alignment please watch this video. After selecting record, listen for the "Beep-Beep" audible noise from the camera. Look for the blinking green LED light to verify the camera is recording. Check your cameras. For long term projects we recommend checking your cameras monthly. Arrive to your site with an extra set of batteries and card-just in case. Any job sites can be tricky, you never know when the camera may be bumped or moved from it's initial location. Taking screen shots as mentioned above and using the Snap shot feature from the camera will allow you to match your initial camera position. TIPS preflight checklist GREAT TIPS CARD Cameras purchased direct from TimeLapseCameras have the card already installed. We recommend using only SanDisc Ultra. Recording short-term events using an interval of constant capture (30 fps) to 2 seconds is considered a "monitored time lapse recording". With the standard 16gb card your content will fill up (or your batteries will deplete) relatively quickly. We typically recommend the monthly check range as a sweet spot. Using the "Minute to win it" with a capture interval of 1 minute and Monday through Friday with working hours based off an 8-10 hour working day. If you extend your working day to beyond 14 hours or include weekends then we recommend checking more frequently. CAPTURE INTERVAL Constant 2-4 hours Check frequently Great for short term moment events CAPTURE INTERVAL 1-14 seconds daily Check Daily For daily events when you want a ton of content captured CAPTURE INTERVAL 15–45 seconds weekly Check weekly Excellent for enough content to summarize your daily or weekly project CAPTURE INTERVAL 1 minute + monthly Check monthly for battery status and to archive your content All information is based off of a recording time for 8–10 hours per day, Monday – Friday. RECOMENDED INTERVAL SETTINGS For every project, we always ask the following questions: What are you recording? How long is your project? How much footage do you want to capture? Based off these questions the following chart is a great start to get you going. All information is based off of 30fps . MEDIA FLYER AWARD NAB 2019 AWARD If we had one story to tell, it would be...how we won Product of the Year at NAB! Here’s how it went. Six weeks before the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Show, which is the largest video and content show in North America, we decided to enter the Afidus camera. So, within the 2 million square feet of exhibit space filled with 2,000 exhibitors and 100,000 attendees, we’d be one tiny speck. Luckily, we scored a small booth space in Central Hall and spent the next few weeks furiously preparing. It wasn’t long before we learned that the Afidus was an official nominee for Product of the Year! The show started off slow, which we sort of expected, but by noon on the first day things were already picking up. Then, after our first interview, we were even busier. More interviewers stopped by and pretty soon we were all on our toes, often with a line of ten or more people waiting to talk to the three of us. Fast forward to the third day, we were beyond the point of exhaustion. The award ceremony started at 5:30, but the show wasn’t scheduled to end until 6:00, and we were still busy talking to the attendees. At 6:15, Marie went to check in at the award ceremony. Soon after, she called to tell us that they wanted to take our picture. When Josh asked why, Marie shouted, "We won! I’m holding the award in my hands. Get here now!" At that point, the show was beyond a success. But to top it off, we were also hand-selected for a "Best in Show" presentation on NAB Live in front of a million viewers. We’ll save the story about how Marie bailed out Josh by grabbing the mic and speaking coherent words for another time. We've collected our interviews and press information below to share with you. INTERVIEWS INTERVIEWS DIY PHOTOGRAPHY This is hands down one of our favorite interviews. The fun started as booth neighbors and Joost summed everything up well, "the camera is a perfect solution for something a lot of people do with the wrong equipment."
